Wokeness is here defined as the state of being cognizant (“woke”; as in “awoken”) of the racial evils that beset Mormonism specifically and the human condition generally. To be sure, not all ex- and progressive Mormons who express outrage over racial injustice in Mormonism are acting in bad faith. It is this performative element - so central to the meaning of the term - that renders wokeness vulnerable to attacks from both the right and the traditional left, while alienating an older cohort for whom politics is ultimately about the real world.
